It’s Party Gras At Harrah’s Casino In New Orleans

Smack dab in the midst of a city already known for its decadent culture and nightlife, Harrah’s Casino in New Orleans is an imported slice of Vegas dropped right down into the delta of Dixie. Located near the foot of Canal Street and a block away from the Mississippi River, it’s situated on the previous site of the Rivergate Convention Center, demolished in 1995.

Today, Harrahs is a 115,000 sq ft party and gaming paradise with approximately 2,100 slot machines and over 90 table games and a poker room. A short tunnel built as part of the canceled Vieux Carré Riverfront Expressway is used for valet parking and for an entrance passing underneath Poydras Street.

By Louisiana law it’s the only land-based private casino with table games in the state (although there are other casinos in the state but their gambling facilities are either on floating boats or horse racing racinos with slot machines).

There’s several places to eat at Harrah’s ranging from buffet style all-you-can-eats to fine dining and cuisine and since it opened in 1999, they’ve been renting nearby hotel rooms to accommodate the out-of-town guests; like the newly renovated 202-room Wyndham Riverfront Hotel.

But in addition to leasing rooms, the casino also opened its own 27-story hotel tower with 450 rooms across the street from the casino on September 21, 2006 just days ahead of the New Orleans Saints return to the Louisiana Superdome.
