Essential Bar Glasses

Because they’re generally served before a meal as appetizers or aperitifs, cocktails should be tart or “dry” in order to stimulate the appetite. Being mostly liquor with only a small amount of flavoring or sweetening such cocktails are naturally more potent.

Depending on the individual taste of the drinker, cocktails can either contain more or less “liquor.” When your guests are not regular drinkers “sweeter” (less liquor) is the obvious way to go, however sophisticated drinkers may appreciate a larger amount of liquor for a more potent flavor.

Most cocktails are best ice-cold; shaken or stirred vigorously with ice cubes (cracked or shaven ice is even better) and served promptly in thin, stemmed glasses. Chilled glasses are an even better refinement.

Cocktails, Martinis and Manhattans which contain only liquor may be stirred vigorously with a rod or a long spoon. Cocktails containing fruit juices or eggs should be shaken in a cocktail shaker. Vodka can be used in place of gin in any recipe. If at all possible avoid making cocktails in advance since the making is a very quick and pleasant process if your ingredients are lined up beforehand.

But no matter how you prepare your drinks remember one important fundamental. It’s better to serve a fine drink in the wrong glass than a poor drink in the right one.

However, now that you’ve prepared a knockout drink, don’t spoil it by overlooking the glassware in which it is served. You’re goal is to have the drink and the glass just right. Most cocktails should be served in the regular cocktail glass, with a stem, and holding about 3 ounces. The stem serves to keep the drink cold and minimize sweating on the glass.
